CFTC Acting Chairman Giancarlo Appoints Erica Elliott Richardson as Director of the Office of Public Affairs

Steven W. Adamske Departs after Six Years as Office of Public Affairs Director

Washington, DC — U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) Acting Chairman J. Christopher Giancarlo today announced the appointment of Erica Elliott Richardson to serve as Director of the Office of Public Affairs (OPA), effective immediately. Richardson served as the Communications Director to Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy on Capitol Hill during his tenure as Whip.

"Erica's knowledge of Capitol Hill and her longstanding relationships with reporters make her a valuable addition to the CFTC," said Acting Chairman Giancarlo. "I know she will be instrumental in promoting the great work of the agency."

Richardson comes to the CFTC from the law and lobbying firm Jochum, Shore & Trossevin PC, where she specialized in global public policy, communications and strategic advisory services.  Her financial services background includes service as a senior staffer to Rep. Scott Garrett during the financial crisis and subsequent Dodd-Frank financial services reform legislative process.

Richardson lives in Washington and London with her husband, Matthew, and is currently pursuing a Doctor of Law and Policy at Northeastern University in Boston. She is a graduate of Auburn University with a Master of Arts degree in political communication and a Bachelor of Arts degree in public relations.

In addition, Acting Chairman Giancarlo announced the departure of Steven W. Adamske, who served as the OPA Director since May of 2011. Adamske served under the direction of four CFTC Chairmen during a time when the agency put in place oversight of the $300 trillion-plus swaps market, protected commercial end-users, enhanced customer protections, originated a customer outreach program, and uncovered attempts to manipulate major financial benchmarks around the world.

“I very much appreciate the hard work and professionalism Steve demonstrated during this transition. He has provided expert advice on press and communications during both my acting Chairmanship and while I was a Commissioner,” said Acting Chairman Giancarlo.

Adamske will continue to serve the Commission as a policy advisor to Commissioner Sharon Y. Bowen.
